Primers continue to get brought up in my blog posts and I must admit that I have a slight obsession. I’m obsessed with how they’ve changed the way my face feels and looks. Not only do they help my make-up to go on smoother, but they also help my make-up to last longer and look better through out the day by controlling shine and oil. I mention a favorite Smashbox primer and a primer/SPF in my blog post, 4 Fav Make-up Products 4 Fall. Plus after I received a mini-facial from Dermalogica I received their primer and talked about it in my blog post, Runway Beauty Forecast with Dermalogica. But, do you really have to pay upwards of $20 or more for a good primer? I went to CVS and Walgreens to see what they have and how it compares. All drug-store primers listed below are $10 or less that’s more than half the price of name brands. Plus, they seem to always have a sale if you buy 2 or more products.

Rimmel London – Fix & Perfect Pro

This primer comes in two colors, either a translucent white or a tint. Since I have fair skin, I opted for the 002 color (translucent). This primer is of a similar consistency of a regular face lotion. It’s creamy, smooth and light-weight. It’s very hydrating and would be perfect for someone with dry skin or someone who doesn’t like to feel dry. My make-up went on smoothly, but not as smoothly as other primers I’ve tried. It helped my make-up to last longer, but not as long as other primers I’ve tried. So, I’d say with this one you get what you pay for. It would be great for someone with dry skin, but since I have oily skin I am rating it 3 stars out of 5.

Maybelline New York – Instant Age Rewind

This primer’s claim to fame is that it is also going to help with fine lines and wrinkles. It goes on clear and although it looks like a gel, it’s not sticky. The consistency is actually a little waxy, but feels soft on your skin. It’s a little slick on your face and I noticed that my make-up went on almost too smoothly that my make-up would rub off and wouldn’t adhere to the smooth surface from the primer. Also, I’m not sure how well it did in preventing future wrinkles from happening, but because the primer is a little thicker it actually fills fine lines to reduce wrinkles while wearing it. With my combination skin and hate for feeling oily, it wasn’t my favorite. If you’re concerned with wrinkles, fine lines and don’t mind the feeling of another layer on your face, then I’d say this is perfect for you. But, for those reasons I’ve rated it as a three starts out of five.

Revlon – Photoready

Third times a charm! This primer is a great combination of the two primers listed above. It fulfills my oily and dry combination skin checklist beautifully and is so much cheaper than some of the other options out there. I love how it pumps out a little amount to prevent from wasting it. The consistency is similar to a face lotion, but feels slightly thicker/creamier. It goes on smoothly and a little bit goes a long way. It’s lightweight and leaves your face matte, which I love! This might be a good thing or a bad thing, but the smell reminds me of bananas or banana bread (maybe this is just me). My make-up goes on easier with this primer underneath and lasts longer with less oil/shine. The packaging might be seen as a downfall because you have to pull off the top when you get closer to the end. There isn’t an easy way to squeeze out the last drops. This primer is my go-to primer now and I give it five stars out of five!! It’s a must try if you have combination skin since it’s hydrating but keeps a matte finish on your skin. Until I can find a primer that works better for my skin, there’s no reason to pay more than $10 or step foot anywhere else besides a drug store.

I’d love to hear your thoughts! Have you tried any of these primers? If so, what did you think? What primer can you not live without?

Be you, bravely.
