After being in a relationship for over five years, living together for most of that time and having a dog-child, Aaron and I can easily forget to have designated “date nights.” This year has especially been crazy with Aaron working and in school full time. Plus, my work, social and styling/blog calendar doesn’t allow for those spontaneous nights out for just the two of us as much. It’s pretty common for us to have a date night once we travel outside of Arizona, but when you aren’t able to board a plane and take a trip every weekend, what do you do?

Our secret is staycations! When the off season months in Arizona are upon us, we take a peek at our favorite hotels and get a great deal for a night stay. Depending on what night you book, you can either go straight to the hotel after work on Friday and spend all Saturday by the pool. Or you can wake up early on Saturday, leave your bags at the front desk and hang out by the pool until your room is ready around 3pm. Then you have the ability to eat dinner at the hotel or nearby. The next day, you have a full day of adventures ahead. It’s the perfect excuse to set aside some alone time with your significant other and gives you something to look forward to without leaving the state.

A staycation can definitely be a pretty expensive way to have a date night. Aaron and I have the Chase Sapphire credit card so that we get points on groceries, gas, and any other necessities that we would be purchasing with our debit card anyway. We monitor our spending closely and pay off the full balance each month. That way we get the perks of points towards hotels and we don’t rack up any interest fees. Even without a credit card, you can sign-up for rewards programs at specific chains of hotels and the more you stay the more points you get towards a free stay. If you travel for work, see if you can stick to one hotel chain and airline so that you can consolidate all of your points at one place and get a free stay faster!

You don’t travel for work and you don’t want another credit card? No problem! Schedule a date night with your hubby and check out some of the restaurants and bars at local resorts and hotels. In the photos here, we are at the Moxy Hotel in Tempe and they have a great bar set up. Sometimes there is live music, or a DJ and they always have hand crafted cocktails on tap, boards games and arcade games to keep you entertained. You don’t have to stay the night here to enjoy the ambiance.

Get creative with your date nights! It doesn’t always have to be dinner and a movie, although those are often times my favorite dates! Jenn at thebodytypestylist.com tells us about a very non traditional date night that was probably the most important thing her and her husband could do for their family. Check out the post here. What other things have you and your significant other done that was different from the typical date night?

  1. These pictures are beautiful! We have a standing date night on Thursdays so we don’t forget, it’s so important!

  2. Michael and I are the same way — we often forget to take a break for a date night, but we’re trying to get better at it! I love the staycation idea. We use a Southwest card for our daily use/pay off every month, so lately we’ve had points for some extra trips, which is nice 🙂
