We are officially in fall! The autumn equinox has come and gone, which means that that our days are now getting shorter and eventually cooler. The most important thing to think about now is… denim! Boots would be the runner-up and long sleeve tops would be in 3rd, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Denim is a very important topic, primarily jeans. If you’re anything like me, you treat premium denim like a designer handbag. It’s so easy to fill your closet and deplete your checking account on the many different styles and brands of jeans. It’s hard to tell which pair will be your favorite until you break them in and test them out with every shirt and shoes that you own. By then, it’s too late and you’re stuck with the expensive jeans even though they’re just slightly too short or just a tad too tight in random areas (like your calves or God-forbid – your “muffin top”). Besides, how many pairs of skinny jeans can you possibly own? Do you really need one pair in every color? Hmm, that’s a great question!

Let me share a secret… There are four styles of jeans that every woman should have in their closet in order to answer no to the following question: “Do I really need another pair of jeans?” With these four styles you should be able to accomplish most things in life…

Earnest Sewn | eBayEarnest Sewn | eBayEarnest Sewn | eBayIMG_0355#1.The Night Out or Professional Jean in Dark Denim
This pant dresses up any outfit. Preferably it should be in a slim fit (pencil leg, cigarette leg or skinny). The weight of the pant makes a difference too. Earnest Sewn jeans (top left) is a slightly heavier weight compared to Joe’s Jeans (top, far right). The heavier weight dresses up an outfit compared to the “jegging” style. However I am a HUGE fan of a jean with some stretch. It’s a world of difference in the comfort category. Not to mention this jean is the more professional jean that is acceptable to wear to work or depending on the company you’re applying for, a job interview. (Don’t tell your grandparents, they might pass out!) As long as the company has a laid back culture, allows jeans to be worn on a daily basis and is fashion-forward. I know, crazy! However, I would suggest to wear business professional to any interview that you’re not sure about. You can easily own two pairs on this category, but keep it to two until you expand your denim collection in the other categories below. Click on the images for wear to shop. Designers in this category are: J Brand, Paige Denim, Joe’s Jeans, and True Religion.

J Brand | eBayJ Brand | eBayJ Brand | eBay#2.The Comfortable Jean in Medium Denim
This jean was hard for me to find. I felt that I needed to have many pairs of “the night out” jean before I would possibly waste my money on a pair of comfortable designer jeans. The true is that you wear these pants more often than any other pair in your closet, so spending a little bit more money on these is worth it. They won’t fall apart on you in a couple months, plus the style is usually pretty classic so you can keep them in your closet for at least a couple years. Just make sure you follow the proper care instructions. I’ve noticed that turning your jeans inside out, washing on cold/cold and hanging to dry extends their longevity. Plus, I know this is gross, but try not to wash them after each wear. I usually try to wait until I absolutely have to wash them. This jean style is going to be based solely on your body type. For me, I prefer a skinny jean with some stretch. Other styles that work are boot cut or cigarette/pencil leg. Look for something that looks good with casual slip-on shoes, boots and/or a heel in case you feel like dressing up. This is the type of pant that I typically wear every day to work, so it’s a good idea to have two pairs of jeans in the category.  Joe’s Jeans and J Brand (above left) are my favorite denim brands. Other designers in this category are: Paige Denim, Citizen’s of Humanity, and 7 for all Mankind.

This jean might be slightly more expensive and might not have as long of a life time. The reason for this is because it’s trendy and it is fashionable now. Premium denim brands will introduce a style that they sell for a season and that’s it. It’s not a jean that will be in the market long, but it’s so fun to have! I suggest only purchasing one pair in this category. For instance, white denim is super trendy in Spring and Summer. In warm climates like Arizona, white denim can be worn year round. The thing with white denim is that the style of the pant can change from one year to the next. Another trend is the boyfriend jean. It’s been around for a couple of years, but it alway seems to be changing in how baggy is appropriate. Lastly, distressed jeans have been trendy for over a decade, but again the styling of how they’re distressed and the style changes. Now that it’s fall, I would suggest purchasing a boyfriend style or something distressed. I typically don’t like the way that a pure white denim looks on me, so I prefer a super light denim or even a grey. This style could really be anything from a wide boyfriend leg to a super skinny leg and everything in between (including capri or ankle jeans). Some designers in this category are: J Brand, True Religion, Joe’s Jeans, Paige Denim, Rag & Bone, Citizen’s of Humanity, Hudson Jeans, AG, Current Elliott, Mother

G Star RAW | eBayG Star RAW | eBayG Star RAW | eBayG Star RAW | eBay#4.The Edgy Jean
This one could easily be confused with the trendy jean. The edgy jean is meant to be your “hot pants”. This is a jean that when you wear them you feel like a million bucks. Think a colorful jean or if that’s not you, then a black jean. There are a lot of these jeans in black in the market with a waxed finish or other details like hits of leather or zippers (G Star RAW below). Again, like the trendy jean this could be many different styles. I prefer a skinny/slim leg because I think personally that’s the most flattering on me and looks great with heels and boots. A goal of mine is to be able to wear these jeans for a more casual look, but still keeping my edge. Below you’ll see that I paired them with ballet flats and a cropped sweater for comfort. Some designers in this category are: Joe’s Jeans, Paige Denim, G Star RAW, Mother, Diesel, Rag & Bone, J Brand, Hudson Jeans, AG, True Religion
