My husband, Aaron and I went to New York City to celebrate my birthday back in August. Luckily, the weekend that we decided to go just happened to be the perfect (feels like) fall vacation. Although this happened a couple months ago, my outfit choices are the perfect choices for these Indian summer days that we’ve been having here in sunny Arizona.

Let me break it down for you…

White Blouse

White, silk, sleeveless blouse from Barneys by A.L.C. Let’s talk undergarments. These blouses and well constructed from the finest materials that are made to lay just so. Don’t ruin the look by adding a under shirt if you can help it. Look for a white lacy bra with full coverage to cover you enough without ruining the delicate look. I have one from Urban Outfitters and another from Victoria’s Secret. Other great places to look would be Nordstrom and For Love And Lemons. Remember, you can always add a sweater to looks like these just in case it gets chilly at night.

Floral Shorts

Shorts from Nordstrom Rack by Splendid. Stretch your shorts into fall during those Indian Summer weekends. Brighten up your day with a fun floral or tribal print. They casual, comfy and look cute. Feel free to dress them up or down as you please.

Colorful Earrings

Turquoise earrings from Kendra Scott. A fun pair of colorful earrings transfer into any season, but get away with those bright summer colors for just a little while longer. Have fun with mixing colors. As you can see I’m not wearing anything turquoise except for my earrings and yet it just works.

Sandals

Gold Sandals from Nordstrom by Steve Madden. Ok, we’re almost done with sandal season. I’d say you have a couple more weeks in warm climate places like Arizona, California, Florida and Hawaii. I have to admit that I am the type of person who will wear sandals until December and then bring them back as early as February. Don’t judge me, it’s warm here people!

Purse

White & Black Purse from Nordstrom by Rebecca Minkoff. Who says you can’t wear white after labor day?! I’ve never listed to those rules, but I do hear that voice in the back of my head when I’m choosing outfits. You don’t want to wear a white, summery outfit during winter and I think that’s where you can apply your grandma’s teachings. This purse is small enough to use on the go, but big enough to car the essentials for a day out. The strap is a black chain so it gives off a “I’m white, but wear me all year long” vibe. Yes, my purses talk to me.

Second Look

Here’s a second look that uses the same concept, but incorporates slightly different elements.

Chambray or denim shirt from Nordstrom by Halogen. Trade in your sleeveless blouse for a long sleeve denim shirt. You can roll up the sleeves if you get a little warm, but it covers you enough so that you probably don’t need to carry around a sweater.

Rolled black shorts from Urban Outfitters by BDG. Trade in your colorful shorts for a darker, more fall color.

White low-top Converse from DSW. Switch out your sandals for a slip-on or lace up tennis shoe especially if you’re out and about for more comfort.

Don’t forget the accessories and jewelry…

Dark Nails

Nail Polish: Dark nails are a must for fall. My all time favorite go to color is Dark Cherry Chutney by OPI.

Pig Tails

Hair: Pigtails. Try something fun and carefree for the weekend. I used to think pigtails were only for little girls under the age of 5, but there’s something simple and complimentary about this look. It’s no fuse and keeps your long hair out of your face. I actually like the look better as the pieces of hair start falling out and looking a little more messy.

Rings

Rings: Play around with different shapes, sizes, colors and placement. I love mixing my metals and finding new ring placements whether it’s a regular ring or a midi. From left to right: Marc Jacobs gold band, Marc Jacobs black mesh, Henri Bendel rose gold midi and CatBird’s brass cat ring.

Ray Bans

Sunglasses: His and her Ray-Bans. Although it’s no longer summer, the sun is still pretty strong. So protect your eyeballs and do it stylishly. If you find a unisex pair than you could share with your significant other and have double the sunglasses collection!

Bracelets

Bracelets: Stack your leather and metal bracelets to add to your look. Feel free to stack your rings too. Just remember what Coco Chanel said, “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory”. We wouldn’t want to stack on too much, now would we. Rings are from Kendra Scott, tan leather fox bracelet is from Nordstrom (gift), MEOW bracelet is BCBG and can be purchased at most department stores (gift) and the snake bangle was purchased at a vintage market in SoHo.

Thanks for reading… let’s go rock those Indian Summer days in style! Part II will feature more looks from my Indian Summer vacation in Chicago.
