Spring Training is my most favorite time in Arizona. Our “winter” weather has passed. The sun is shining. There’s a light breeze. Everyone is in town visiting. And it’s acceptable to start your Tuesday with a bloody mary because hey, you’re going to the game! Similar to the Phoenix Open, Spring Training can end up being more about socializing with friends than about actually watching the game. That might be why these are two of my favorite sporting events to go to. It’s the act of leaving work early, getting a hot dog and a beer, and running into old friends who you haven’t seen since last year at this time. This is also the time of the year right before everyone goes into hibernation or travels somewhere cooler for summer vacation.

A popular question that is always asked before a game is, “what are you wearing?” I love this question because styling a head-to-toe look around an event or theme has been one of my favorite things to do since the first time I picked up a Barbie. For a sporting event you could go in two different directions. The first being the ultra fangirl look where you have a team that you’re reping and wear your jersey, t-shirt, sweatshirt, etc. The other option is wearing something casual that fits in for the event, but is non-traditional. Both are great options!

I personally prefer the second option for a couple of reasons. The main reason is because I can never find a team t-shirt or tank top that is flattering on the female figure (my female figure – my body type isn’t even a type because I’m pretty sure no one else has the issues I have, seriously.) I found one last October by Under Armour and I didn’t purchase it because it was $50 and I thought that was too expensive, so the second reason is because of how expensive they are. It seems like when there is a sports team associated on an article of clothing it almost doubles in cost. For me, I don’t go to games a ton and my work environment doesn’t typically allow that casual of attire. Instead, I prefer to wear clothes that are already in my wardrobe. Something that I would wear casually on the weekend like to brunch or even to work. However, the way that I style the pieces lends itself to a sporting event.

The two outfits shown above follow the same uniform. They are both casual button down tops pair with the same cut off shorts, tennis shoes, and a hat. If I wore the same outfit with a pair of boots or a floppy hat, it would have a totally different vibe. A white top goes a long way at a spring training game. You could be neutral if you don’t have a team, or typically white goes with any sports team if you have a hat that you want to wear. The second top that I’m wearing is a classic plaid flannel, which is great for this time of year if you don’t know what the weather might be like. You can always wear a crop top or a tank top underneath if you get hot and want to tie the flannel around your waist. Cut off shorts are so sporty and casual, especially when worn with Converse, Vans, or any other type of tennis shoe or slip-on. I’m loving the cut off shorts with a high waist because they are so comfortable. These shorts are a new favorite of mine from a designer brand that has been around since 2007, but I hadn’t discovered them before. The name is Blank NYC, blanknyc.com. A team hat is the perfect accessory to show your team spirit. It shows off your team, it protects you from the sun, and it allows you to not have to worry about your hair – win, win, win! If a hat isn’t your thing, it’s not always mine, you can take it off and clip it onto your purse. Lastly, I have to wear my new favorite necklace by Sugar Bean Jewelry (blog post here.) I happen to hear that four-letter word A LOT when I go to sporting events with my husband.

If you’re local, comment below what your favorite ball park is for Spring Training! I went to the Giants stadium for the first time on opening day and since then I’ve been to Sloan park, which is definitely a favorite of ours for obvious reasons. #gocubs
