I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for warmer weather. I know, I can’t complain because the coldest it’s been in Arizona this season is low 40’s, but I find myself only wanting to wear the same cozy sweater week after week that I’m in need of a wardrobe refresh. The last couple months in winter are difficult to dress. You’re too cold to be cute. I realize that right now most people in the United States are not going to brave the cold on their bare legs and wear a dress, but don’t forget that tights and over-the-knee or knee-high boots go a long way in keeping your legs warm and letting you dress up a little bit. Neither are shown here, however I love wearing the red dress with a pair of black tights. Let me help you spice up your wardrobe during those last couple of winter months.

Here are my top three tips for spicing up your wardrobe for those last lingering winter months:

  1. Choose a pop of color! Who said you can’t wear a bright color or white during the winter. Banish those old rules and look for a color that is rich and/or bright. Stay away from any neons or any color that is too warm like a canary yellow or hot pink. Instead opt for the colors with the cool undertones like the red dress I’m wearing in the first photo. Winter white is a great option because it has a rich creamy/velvety feeling to it as opposed to a summer white that is a bright white. Other great colors are cobalt blue, mustard yellow as long as it’s not too brown or tan, kelly green, magenta, wine, plum, etc.
  2. Test out a trend! You don’t have to buy a whole new wardrobe to feel like you own a whole new wardrobe. Purchase one or two pieces that are trendy this season like the off the shoulder tops and dresses. The good thing with this style is that it can easily transition into spring fashion. Try your look with a pair of pants and boots to read more winter fashion. I tested out a new top from Anthropologie and decided to tuck it into my high waisted pants for a more put together look. Try something that you wouldn’t typically do. Another hot trend is bell sleeves. You can go as literal as you want. In the long sleeve dress I’m wearing, I’m as subtle as can be with the bell sleeve trend, but I’ve seen some great sweaters that are pretty distinctive.
  3. Pattern is your friend! So many people stay away from pattern in the winter months. It seems like black and grey are the only colors on the shelves. I’m guilty of this too. Black, grey and white are my favorite colors – I know what you’re thinking! But, every once in awhile I see a gorgeous pattern that speaks to me. For winter, I like to choose something that is more subtle and subdued. In the long sleeve dress shown here, I fell in love with the dark undertones, but enjoy the little hints of color. The color combination reads fall or winter, which is exactly what I’m going for. If you’re comfortable with patterns, you can try something a little more loud than what I’m wearing, but try to stay in the winter color family.

A little about the photo shoot… I had the opportunity to visit photographer Chad Ulam as he was shooting photos at the new ILuminate Apartments in downtown Phoenix, Arizona. As you can see, the roof deck was my favorite spot to hang out. It has a gorgeous 360 degree view of the Phoenix skyline. Inside the property there is a common area with a pool table and modern furniture to hang out. They also have an impressive workout area. I didn’t get a chance to see an apartment room, but I hear they are amazing!

  1. I love this post for a few reasons. 1. I never follow winter rules (I always wear white, oops). 2. People should always try different trends! So many say that they can’t pull different things off– Its only when you think you can’t, then you can’t. 3. You are so gorg!

  2. Such great advice and loving your choices! I’m currently bored with my winter clothes and just bought some bell sleeved items AND off the shoulder. Love those two trends and such an easy way to amp up your wardrobe.

  3. OMG that red dress is everything!! You look amazing- legs for days girl!! And those apartments looks ridiculous!

  4. I love how you pointed out the cool undertones, i totally agree on this for the season. And I am obsessing over bell sleeves! You look beautiful!
