I have a special place in my heart for dresses. They can be girly, sexy, dressy, casual, comfortable, and most importantly easy to wear. I can still remember fighting my mom to let me wear a dress to preschool during the winter months. Obviously my mom was concerned about me getting too cold. Although, I’m fairly certain my friend Ashley’s mom let her wear a dress over her pants and she was fine. Mom wasn’t too fond of that look…

Now, many years later and I’m still fighting to wear dresses during winter. The good thing is that Arizona’s weather makes it a bit more manageable. Below are some casual dresses, long and short, that I’ve taken from my spring and summer wardrobe in order to show you how to prolong the dress cycle to be year round.

The slideshow above is showing the most obvious way to extend your dresses into your winter wardrobe. Never underestimate the power of tall riding boots, tights and scarves (two dresses are shown without the tights, but a neutral black, brown or grey would look great). This combination works for silk tunics, layered looks and cotton shirt dresses. Shown with the cotton shirt dress is a thicker legging from BCBG that definitely keeps you warm.

Taking the look that my mom hated during the late ’80’s and putting a fresh twist for a women at any age is to add skinny jeans and short booties (as shown in the above slideshow).

For me, maxi dresses can actually be too hot during the summer. The cotton fabric can add an extra layer of heat that keeps me warmer than some of my jeans. Take advantage of the maxi during these cooler months. If you’re unsure about the sleeveless maxi’s then don’t be afraid to add a shirt on top of the dress. Something to take into consideration is that you’ll want to match the fabric of the dress or make sure that the fabrics are complimentary. For instance, a knit top on top of a knit dress works as long as it is a crop top shape that accentuates your waistline. Another top that works great is a denim or chambray top either worn as a light jacket or tied at the waist. Adding boots or a scarf to your look will transition it to winter immediately.
