Last week, I shared a twist to the very popular athleisure trend (blog post here), featuring a long sleeve top from Lululemon that you can not only work out in, but you can accessorize it to dress it up and wear to work, brunch or happy hour. Today, I’m sharing another example using Lululemon leggings. Leggings are a touchy subject. They were reintroduced in the early 2000’s and became a very popular trend once again. They keep expanding to a variety of textures, styles, and many different ways to wear them were. I tend to steer clear of the legging trend in everyday wear mainly because typical leggings don’t fit me. They’re either too short, when I want them to be long, too loose or too tight. I’m terrified of them being see through and I don’t own many tops or dresses that really fit the legging look.

About six months ago I discovered Lululemon’s second skin yoga pants, well that’s what the sales associated called them, but they’re actually called Align Pant II. They literally feel like a second skin and are so soft, but not the slick fabric that most workout leggings are. They are thick enough to prevent that see-through disaster, but not too thick that you’re not comfortable. When I bought them I almost felt guilty about working out in them because they’re so nice. I decided to add them into my wardrobe for things other than exercise and they’ve become a staple ever since.

Somethings that I keep in mind when I’m crossing the line from “exercise wear” athleisure to “everyday wear” athleisure are…

  • Stick with neutrals – Like I mentioned in last week’s post, Lululemon is aware that people are wearing their athletic wear as everyday wear and are being cognizant with blending of the seams and logos to match the color of the piece of clothing. Sometimes with crazier colors, it appears to be more exercise wear or show off the logos or seams. If you stick to neutrals like black, grey, white or even a dark blue or maroon, it’s not as obvious. Even in the rest of the outfit, sometimes less is more. I chose to keep it neutral with a Melrose and Market white and black striped knit shirt from Nordstrom Rack. It has a high side slit to add drama to the top and a long back to cover my booty.
  • Choose quality over quantity – Again, make sure that your leggings are not see through! Do not skimp on quality here, especially if it’s something that is tightly covering your butt. Check for how the leggings are constructed. Are there multiple seams that lay flat on your skin and don’t stick out? Does the fabric lay flat on your midriff instead of pinch into your skin? That is neither comfortable, nor flattering! Lastly, when wearing them do they hold their shape rather than stretching out around your knees and butt.
  • Wear appropriate footwear – Footwear makes a big difference in your look depending on whether you want to dress it up or keep it sporty. I opted for a pair of over the knee Sam Edelman boots to dress up the look, but a pair of high top Chucks would have looked great too and given off a streetwear vibe.
  • Don’t forget to accessorize – Wearing a knit top and leggings wasn’t enough for me, so I added a denim jacket for texture, which I found in the juniors section at Target. Yep, it’s a size 14 in girls! I added a clay necklace from Sonia Gracia to give the look some dimension, a vintage silver bracelet that I purchased at a local estate sale and a gold plated snake cuff from a market in SoHo. I love jewelry that tells a story, even if the only person who knows the story is me.

Always remember, no matter what look you’re going for, make sure you feel comfortable! If not, you won’t be truly confident in who you are, which prevents your personal style from shining through. Embrace you!
